The Importance of Self-Reflection

Lesson Fifteen

Before we start this lesson, let’s take a moment to watch this video, and settle our mind.

A Guide to Self-Reflection

Self-reflection means taking time to look inward at your own thoughts, feelings, and actions. It helps you understand yourself better and grow into the person you want to be.

Why Self-Reflection Helps You

  • You learn what makes you happy or upset.
  • You spot patterns in how you think and act.
  • You make better choices because you understand yourself.
  • You catch mistakes early and correct them.
  • You build a stronger, kinder relationship with yourself.
  • You feel more in control of your life.
  • How Self-Reflection Improves Your Thinking

When you reflect, you step back from your thoughts and watch them like a curious observer. This lets you notice unhelpful patterns, question whether your thoughts are true, and choose better ones. Over time, your mind becomes clearer and calmer because you’re no longer swept away by every passing thought.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • How do I feel right now, and why?
  • What went well today, and what didn’t?
  • Did I act in line with who I want to be?
  • What triggered my stress or anger today?
  • Am I being honest with myself about this?
  • What would I do differently next time?
  • Am I holding onto thoughts that don’t help me?
  • What am I grateful for today?
  • Did I respect my own boundaries?
  • What does my body need right now?

Bad Habits Self-Reflection Helps You Avoid

  • Blaming others instead of seeing your own part.
  • Repeating the same mistakes without learning.
  • Ignoring your feelings until they explode.
  • Saying yes to things that drain you.
  • Letting negative self-talk run wild unchecked.
  • Acting on impulse without thinking first.
  • Holding grudges that poison your peace.
  • Avoiding hard truths about yourself.

How to Practice Self-Reflection

Set aside a few quiet minutes each day. Write in a journal or just sit and think. Ask yourself the questions above. Be honest and kind with your answers. Over time, this habit builds wisdom and inner strength.

You are not so much trying to solve any problems, instead, you are learning how to describe and better understand yourself. You will learn to spot what motivates you, what inspires you, and also, what challenges you. Sometimes, just this simple act of a “daily” review, is all that you need to keep in your flow.

Seeing yourself from another’s point of view

Sometimes it is good to try to imagine how you are seen by others. A reflection is a view of  oneself, via a mirror, but it is often difficult to see everything, just by using one’s “inner” mirror.

However, when you speak to others, how they respond to you, is also a reflection of you. It may be biased, because, of course, no-one really knows you. But when we look at that response, sometimes it can give us more clues about ourselves. It may also help you understand better, other people, and how they too, behave.

Self-reflection is a gift you give yourself—a way to grow, heal, and live with more purpose.
