Independent Self and Interdependent Self

Although Rogers wrote mainly about the real self and ideal self, the terms independent self and interdependent self come from later “self‑construal” research in cultural psychology that can be applied alongside his ideas. In simple terms, the independent self is “me as a separate individual,” while the interdependent self is “me as part of a web of relationships.”

Independent self

An independent self-construal emphasizes being a distinct, autonomous person with personal traits, choices, and goals that are not defined by others. People who lean this way tend to value personal achievement, self-expression, and making decisions based on internal preferences more than on group expectations.

Interdependent self

An interdependent self-construal emphasizes being fundamentally connected with others, where identity is shaped by roles, relationships, and group membership. People who lean this way tend to value harmony, obligation, and fitting in or contributing to the group, often deciding what to do by considering others’ needs and the social context.

Rogers saw the self as shaped by relationships and the social environment, which fits well with an interdependent view, but he also stressed inner experience and self-direction, which echo the independent view. In practice, a person growing in the Rogerian sense can be understood as integrating both: becoming more self-directed and authentic (independent) while remaining deeply responsive and open to others (interdependent).

Incongruence between self and experience

In Rogers’ theory, incongruence arises when the way a person sees themselves clashes with what they are actually experiencing at a deeper, “organismic” level. This mismatch usually develops over time rather than from a single event.

Conditions of worth in childhood

A central influence is “conditions of worth” learned from important others, especially parents and caregivers. When love and approval feel dependent on behaving or feeling a certain way (e.g. being “good,” successful, or compliant), the child starts denying or twisting any experiences that do not fit those conditions.

Introjected values and external standards

Over time, people internalize (“introject”) external expectations about what makes them acceptable or valuable. When these borrowed values replace the person’s own inner sense of what feels right, the self-concept stops matching real feelings and needs, creating ongoing tension and anxiety.

Distortion and denial of experience

To protect a fragile self-image built on conditions of worth, the person may distort, minimize, or block awareness of experiences that threaten that image. This defensive filtering widens the gap between self and experience, so the person feels vulnerable, rigid, and often confused about what they truly feel.

Culture, relationships, and ongoing feedback

Cultural norms, schooling, work environments, and close relationships can all reinforce conditional acceptance and rigid roles, adding further pressure to be a certain “type” of person. When life events or relationships repeatedly reward the false self and punish authentic expression, incongruence tends to deepen and can lead to distress, low self-worth, and maladjustment.
