Uncertainty

Uncertainty is not knowing what will happen, or not having enough information to feel sure about an outcome. It can be about big things (health, money, world events) or small things (how a conversation will go, whether a plan will work).

What uncertainty is in plain English

Uncertainty is the “I don’t know” space: there are different possible futures, and it isn’t clear which one will actually happen. Sometimes even the range of possibilities is unclear, so it feels foggy rather than just risky.

This “not knowing” often makes the brain scan for danger, which is why uncertainty easily links with worry and “what if?” thoughts.

How uncertainty affects feelings and behaviour

When the future feels unclear, many people:

  • Imagine worst‑case scenarios and feel anxious or on edge.
  • Delay decisions or avoid action, hoping for more certainty first.
  • Try to control everything, over-checking news, messages, or plans to calm their nerves.

A moderate amount of uncertainty is normal and unavoidable in life; problems grow when the mind demands 100% certainty in situations where that is impossible.

Helpful ways to live with uncertainty

  • Shift attention to the present: Instead of repeatedly predicting the future, bring focus back to what can be seen, done, or enjoyed right now.
  • Act on what you can control: Small, concrete steps (planning, saving, asking questions, preparing) reduce helplessness, even when outcomes are not guaranteed.
  • Practise “accepting uncertainty”: Gently remind yourself that some not‑knowing is built into life, and that it’s possible to move forward without having every answer first.
  • Use grounding and “flow” activities: Engaging deeply in a task (reading, games, exercise, creative work) can give the mind a rest from constant what‑ifs and improve mood during waiting periods.

Uncertainty is the gap between what a person wants to know and what can actually be known right now; learning to make room for that gap makes life less frightening and more workable.
