Lesson Six
Safety
Safety often means that you have a calm space in your mind, and that you are able to relax, and think clearly. It means that you feel shielded from harm, and have no nagging thoughts such as deep fears, thoughts of harm to self, or even wild, confusing, frustrating or upsetting thoughts.
You feel free to share your truth, and feel no stresses in danger of breaking you down.
From a mental health viewpoint, safety grows from strong bounds and kind care. It often means that you feel safe at home, and within the community that you live in: At School, college, university, work, in town, anywhere you go, it is important that you feel safe, or are comfortable with any risks that you may feel are there.
Safety is always relative, sometimes, people can feel safe, yet be in a dangerous place, either where they are located, or by their thoughts and actions.
True safety may not be certain, but the idea is that you always safe to go about your day to day life.
Keep Yourself Safe Each Day
To keep safe, start by knowing what signs warn you that you feel bad or unsafe. Maybe you get very sad or want to be alone. Write these signs down so you can see them clearly.
Next, make a simple plan for what to do when you notice these signs. Maybe go for a walk, call a friend, or take deep breaths. Keep things that might hurt you out of reach.
It also helps to be with kind people you trust. Tell at least one person your plan and ask for help when things feel hard. If needed, seek help from a counsellor or doctor.
Check yourself often. See if your plan works and adjust if needed. Taking small steps to stay safe in your mind builds strength and peace over time.
In short: mental health safety means knowing yourself, making a plan, getting help, and taking small steps to stay calm and strong inside.
Throughout this course, we will be building your safe habits and ways of thinking and dealing with life. Safety is our number one concern.
Lesson Affirmation

Set yourself and intention to keep yourself safe as possible. This intention has to accept that life has risks that cannot be foreseen, so the intention has to be similar, in feeling, to the idea of being as best as you can be. The intention required, is to set yourself a promise to keep yourself as safe as can be.
Appendix: Additional Notes
Mental health safety means feeling calm and secure in your mind. It means no big fears or hurts stop you from living. When you feel safe mentally, you can share your thoughts and be yourself without stress or fear.
