Distractions

A distraction is anything that pulls your mind away from what you mean to be doing. It makes it harder to stay focused, think clearly, or finish a task.

What a distraction is

A distraction is something that steals your attention from your main activity, like a phone buzz while you are trying to read. It can be annoying (making it hard to think) or pleasant (like a fun movie that takes your mind off worries).

Types of distractions

  • Outside distractions: noises, people talking, phone notifications, TV, clutter, or anything in your surroundings that grabs your attention.
  • Inside distractions: your own thoughts, daydreaming, worries, hunger, tiredness, or stress that make your mind wander away from the task.

Why distractions matter

Distractions break your concentration so you work more slowly, make more mistakes, or forget what you were doing. They can also be used on purpose to get a mental break, for example using a hobby or a show to take your mind off problems for a while.
