Tonic immobility is an involuntary, reflexive state of total motor paralysis and unresponsiveness. Triggered by extreme, overwhelming fear or physical restraint, it acts as a final defense mechanism when escape or fighting back is impossible. It occurs across many species, including animals, sharks, and humans.
