Nerve signals, or impulses, are rapid electrical messages that travel along neurons, created by ion flow across cell membranes (action potentials) and transmitted between neurons via chemical messengers called neurotransmitters at synapses. This process allows the nervous system to transmit information, from sensory input to motor commands, enabling thought, movement, and automatic body functions, using a combination of electrical flow within neurons and chemical release between them.
