The parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) is a part of the autonomic nervous system that controls the body’s functions when it is at rest or in normal situations. It opposes the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body for stress or danger. The PSNS stimulates activities such as digestion, salivation, urination, and sexual arousal. It acts on organs by releasing a chemical called acetylcholine at the ends of nerve fibres.
