Linehan was inspired by her own experience of struggling with suicidal behaviour and being misdiagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager. She later discovered that she had borderline personality disorder and used her knowledge of Cognitive-behavioural therapy, Zen meditation, and acceptance to create DBT. Linehan is an Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington and has published several books on DBT and related topics.
