According to Jung, the animus is the unconscious masculine side of a woman, and the anima is the unconscious feminine side of a man, each transcending the personal psyche. These are two primary anthropomorphic archetypes of the unconscious mind that represent the “true self” rather than the image presented to others. For example, a woman may project her animus onto a man she admires or fears, seeing him as an ideal or a threat, while a man may project his anima onto a woman he loves or hates, seeing her as a goddess or a witch.
